JULY 4, 2016 — TULSA, OKLA. — A recording including Daniel M. Reck performing with the DePauw University Band is featured on this week's episode of Wind & Rhythm. The weekly program is carried on select public radio stations. The episode, "A Birthday for Our Country," can also be heard via the player at the end of this story.

"We're in good company" for this patriotic episode, says Craig Paré, conductor of the DePauw University Band, "with other performances by the United States Marine Band 'The President's Own,' the United States Air Force Band, and the United States Army Field Band." The episode features the band's recording of "The Star Spangled Banner (A Love Song to our Country)," arranged by Jack Stamp.

"It is a privilege for this recording to be so prominently featured nearly 15 years after we made it for Wind Journey," Reck says, referring to the DePauw band's 2002 album the Mark Custom label. Reck played clarinet on the recording while he studied computer science, music composition, and conducting at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind.

"Dr. Paré has established a wonderful music education tradition where the DePauw Band produces a studio album every other year," Reck says. "For a lot of us, it was our first experience with the challenges of a professional recording environment. I continue to draw upon lessons from Dr. Paré as I prepare my ensembles for performance." Reck has gone on to conduct high school and college bands, as well as handbell ensembles. He presently directs the Shadows of Bronze, which has also been featured on public radio.

Hosted by Doug Brown, the Wind & Rhythm is devoted exclusively to the music of wind bands: wind symphonies, wind ensembles, wind orchestras, concert bands, symphonic bands, and brass bands. Previous episodes (220 and 227) of the show also featured recordings of the DePauw Band, which has released nine compact discs.

"Being recognized solely for the quality of our recorded performances is a true honor," said Paré when the band was previously featured on the program. "And to be featured internationally, alongside the preeminent professional and graduate school ensembles in the United States is, well, frankly, overwhelming."
