SEPTEMBER 5, 2004 — GREENCASTLE, IND. — The DePauw School of Music presents the DePauw University Orchestra in its opening concert of the academic year on Sunday, September 19, featuring the first performance of a new work by a recent DePauw graduate. Under the direction of Orcenith Smith, the Orchestra will present Of Dreams Eternal by 2003 DePauw graduate, Daniel Reck. The work is a musical tribute to the life of Douglas Jeffries, who was graduated in the same year with a degree in computer engineering from Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute. A member of the Rose-Hulman Pep Band and DePauw’s Tiger Pep Band, he was killed in February in a weather-related automobile accident.
Reck received word of the accident as he was putting the final touches on his composition. “From the start, Of Dreams Eternal was intended to be a celebration of dreams and life,” Reck says, “It isn’t a memorial, but a fitting portrait of Doug’s life. He touched a lot of people.”
